Big Events in Atlanta:

• Chick-fil-A Kickoff Game – Located at the Georgia Dome, this annual Labor Day event features two premier college football teams and welcomes in the football season to thousands of fans in the stands (and even more on television). This year the game will be held on Saturday, Sept. 5th at 3:30pm featuring the Auburn Tigers vs. Louisville Cardinals. *Click here to get your tickets; hurry because they will be sold out soon!

• Dragon Con – This gigantic multi-media, pop-culture convention takes over the hotels and streets of Atlanta every year during Labor Day weekend. The annual Saturday morning Dragon Con Parade is the biggest parade in Atlanta and provides endless entertainment to locals and visitors alike.

• Black Gay Pride – Piedmont Park plays host to the Black Gay Pride festival with a Sunday music festival; other features include local parties, empowerment sessions and workshops, health and wellness fairs and much more! For more information, check out  http://inthelifeatlanta.org/pride/.

Labor Day Weekend Events Outside of Atlanta

• Stone Mountain Park – Located just outside of Atlanta, Stone Mountain Park offers a great family-friendly atmosphere full of fun! During Labor Day weekend the park celebrates by offering an extended fireworks show, including a special tribute to all hardworking heroes that immediately follows the Laser show. This occurs every night from September 4th-6th.

• Marietta Art in the Park – About 35 minutes north of Atlanta, the historic Marietta Square Park features this annual art show and street festival from Sept. 5th-7th (10am – 5pm daily). Your family won’t want to miss this award-winning festival.

• AJC Decatur Book Festival – “The AJC Decatur Book Festival is the largest independent book festival in the country and one of the five largest overall. Since its launch, more than 1,000 world-class authors and hundreds of thousands of festival-goers have crowded the historic downtown Decatur square to enjoy book signings, author readings, panel discussions, an interactive children’s area, live music, parades, cooking demonstrations, poetry slams, writing workshops, and more. About the Event

The Taste of Atlanta food festival is held for three days in Midtown and delves into a diverse group of cuisine from various Atlanta neighborhoods, featuring local chefs and restaurants in the Atlanta community. New Festival Feature

This year the Taste of Atlanta will be launching a “cashless payment system” using wristbands with RFID technology. Attendees will be able to load “Taste Points” online in advance; however, they can also load points at “Taste Point Banks” around the festival.

August is National Picnic Month, and in honor of this, ForLease Atlanta has come up with a list of great places around the city of Atlanta to enjoy a nice picnic with your friends or family.

Piedmont Park

Known as Atlanta’s ‘central city park,’ Piedmont Park spans 211 acres and is located about one mile northeast of downtown Atlanta, near Midtown and the Virginia Highlands. It hosts several notable annual events and festivals, such as the Atlanta Pride festival and Atlanta Dogwood Festival. It is also open year round for those interested in nature, sports, (running, biking, walking, etc.) and is a perfect urban green space for a picnic!  

Oakland Cemetery

If you are new to Atlanta, it may seem odd to list a cemetery as a great place to have a picnic; however, you have to experience historic Oakland Cemetery before you knock it! Described as a “Victorian garden cemetery,” this 48 acre park is filled with historic figures, a sculpture garden, botanical garden, public park and even has it’s own events calendar! Spend the day taking a self-guided walking tour (guided tours are available on weekends), then settle in somewhere and enjoy a nice picnic in one of the most unique picnic spots in Atlanta.

The Gardens of The Carter Center

Located a few minutes from downtown Atlanta, the beautiful gardens located in the 35 acre park which surrounds The Carter Center, provides an ideal and serene setting for a romantic picnic. The park is open to the the public year round and offers a variety of stunning formal gardens, two small lakes, a cherry orchard, and even has waterfalls! The gorgeous Japanese garden was designed by Master Gardener Kinsaku Nakane and is a visitor favorite.

Historic Fourth Ward Park

The Old Fourth Ward has changed greatly, making huge strides over the past few years, and its latest park additions make it the perfect place for a family picnic. Your family can make a day of it and enjoy the playing field, playground, skate park or the new splash pad addition. Check out the park map here for more information.

A few other great picnic spots in Atlanta include the green spaces around the Atlanta Beltline, Centennial Olympic Park and the Chattahoochee River National Recreation Area (East Palisades Area).
